Certifications

  • GOTS Certified Organic

Certified by Global Organic Textile Standard

GOTS certification verifies that a textile product's organic fibre content and its full processing supply chain meet defined organic, environmental and social criteria.

    What it checks

    • Confirms fibres used are certified organic (e.g. cotton, wool, hemp, silk, linen)
    • Checks chemical inputs, wastewater treatment and environmental management during processing
    • Verifies human rights and social due-diligence criteria across the supply chain
    • Requires traceability, annual on-site audits and transaction-based checks at every processing stage

What it does not cover This certification addresses organic fibre content, processing chemicals and supply-chain conditions; it is not a general product safety, flammability, or choking-hazard test.

This certification is held by the brand or manufacturer, not by Birch. We show it because the brand states it for this product. Summarised from the certifying body's own page.

  • Fair Trade Certified

Certified by Fair Trade USA / Fairtrade International

Fair Trade Certified verifies that a product's supply chain met third-party standards for farmer/worker treatment and trade practices, such as fair pricing and safe conditions.

    What it checks

    • Third-party certification of farmers, workers, and supply chains across 30+ product categories
    • Standards addressing fair pricing, wages, and working conditions for producers
    • Verification and traceability of certified supply chains through Fair Trade USA's programs

What it does not cover This certification addresses labor and trade practices in the supply chain; it does not test or certify the safety, quality, or materials of the finished product itself.

    IDFL

CURATEIQ

TrustScore breakdown

91 /100

We take what's most important for a product to determine the TrustScore. Here's our research:

Fiber Content & Origin 91

The romper's composition is published to the percentage — 88% cotton and 12% linen, a natural-fibre blend with no synthetic base layer — and the organic status is tied to a named certifying body, IDFL Laboratory and Institute, under GOTS license IDFL 010673. The cotton is grown and the garment made in India, where the brand sources because that is where its organic cotton is harvested.

Construction & Fastener Safety 84

The romper closes with snaps rather than buttons and is a sleeveless ruffle design with no neck cords or ties and no detachable decorative appliqués. What is missing is any account of attachment security: snap retention, seam construction and small-parts performance after use and abuse are not addressed, and no test method or result is given.

Dye Safety 92

The romper is coloured with AZO-free, non-toxic water-based dyes, and the base fabric is a cotton-linen blend rather than a synthetic, so disperse dyes are not in play. GOTS processing prohibits bleach and formaldehyde and requires non-toxic colourants, OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 is named for the products, and an independent review repeats the AZO-free dye position.

Textile Certification 92

GOTS is asserted for the finished garments, not only the fibre: the brand holds GOTS license number IDFL 010673 through IDFL Laboratory and Institute, its products and facility are certified organic, every product carries the organic certification label, and this romper is made at a GOTS certified factory in India. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 is also named for the products.

Recall History 97

We queried the complete CPSC recall corpus — 9,944 records spanning June 1973 to August 2026 — searching the brand name as a whole word across titles, descriptions and manufacturer, importer and retailer fields, and Makemake Organics appears nowhere in it, in any role, at any date. A control on the same corpus returns hundreds of records for children's product classes such as cribs, strollers and toys, so the clean result reflects the brand's absence rather than a failed search.

Certification Credibility 92

Makemake Organics is a GOTS licensed brand under license number IDFL 010673, certified by IDFL Laboratory and Institute, an independent third-party organic certifier, and the products and the facility are certified organic with the organic certification label carried on the garments. Fair Trade and OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 are also named for the products, and independent write-ups repeat the GOTS and OEKO-TEX claims.

Chemical Finish Avoidance 92

The romper is free of PFAS, formaldehyde, flame retardants, phthalates and AZO dyes, and the rompers are untreated with flame retardants — which is why they are sold as daywear rather than sleepwear. Nothing in the product's marketing offers easy-care, wrinkle-resistant, non-iron or stain- or water-repellent performance; the care guidance instead calls for ironing on cool. An independent review repeats the PFAS-free and flame-retardant-free position.

Pre-Wash & Care Guidance 88

Care guidance is published in detail with the romper: machine wash on gentle, do not bleach, iron on cool, tumble dry on low and remove promptly, with mild plant-based soap or mild detergent recommended and wool dryer balls suggested instead of softener. It stops short of the one thing this criterion most wants — there is no instruction to wash the garment before first wear.

Transparency & Support 90

Fibre content is published on the romper itself (88% cotton, 12% linen), and the garments are designed in Florida and manufactured in India. Independent coverage repeats the Florida-design and India-manufacture split. The specific manufacturing partner is not named.

Hardware & Print Safety 88

The romper is free of AZO dyes, phthalates and formaldehyde, the patterns are printed with non-toxic water-based dyes rather than a thick raised plastisol, and OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 is named for the products. The disclosure stops short in two places: the snaps are not stated to be nickel-free or lead-free, and no heavy-metal migration or small-parts result is published for the hardware.
