Non-Toxic Diapering Essentials

A good diapering setup makes those 8–12 daily changes much easier. Start with fragrance-free disposable diapers from brands that publish their full ingredient lists, and pair them with gentle, low-ingredient baby wipes that are kind to newborn skin. Keep an organic diaper cream or balm within reach to protect against redness and rash.

At home, a comfortable changing pad and cover gives you a clean, safe surface for every change, and an odour-locking diaper pail keeps the nursery fresh. For outings, choose from our diaper bags, with wet/dry pouches and caddies to keep everything organised.

Setting up your nursery? Our diapering setup checklist covers everything you'll need for the first months, and the BabyLog daily care tracker helps you track diaper changes once your baby arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a diaper non-toxic?

Look for diapers that are free of fragrance, lotions and dyes, and bleached using a chlorine-free process: TCF (totally chlorine free) or ECF (elemental chlorine free). Independent certifications such as EWG Verified and MADE SAFE confirm a brand has been screened for harmful ingredients. Birch only stocks brands that publish full ingredient transparency.

How many diapers does a newborn use?

Newborns typically go through 8–12 diapers a day in the first few weeks, which can add up to around 300 a month. The number drops gradually as your baby grows, and a monthly diaper subscription can save you from running out.

What size diaper should I buy?

Diaper sizes are based on weight rather than age. Newborn sizes usually fit babies up to about 10 lbs, and Size 1 typically fits 8–14 lbs. Many babies outgrow newborn diapers within a few weeks, so buy only a pack or two at first.

How can I prevent and treat diaper rash?

Change diapers promptly, clean gently with water-based wipes, and let the skin air-dry before putting on a fresh diaper. A barrier diaper cream or balm helps protect irritated skin. Call your pediatrician if a rash lasts more than a few days, blisters, or comes with a fever.

Are water wipes better for babies?

Water-based wipes contain very few ingredients, usually mostly purified water, so they're less likely to irritate sensitive or newborn skin. They're a good choice for babies prone to rash or eczema.

Are compostable diapers really compostable?

Diapers with TÜV compostability certification break down in industrial composting facilities, not usually in a backyard compost. Soiled diapers generally need a dedicated diaper composting service, so check what's available in your area or through the diaper brand.

What should I pack in a diaper bag?

A good rule is one diaper for every 2–3 hours you'll be out, plus wipes, a portable changing pad, diaper cream, a spare outfit and a wet/dry bag for soiled clothes. Browse our diaper bags for options with built-in organisation.
