TrustScore breakdown

83 /100

We take what's most important for a product to determine the TrustScore. Here's our research:

Safe Volume Output 84

Hatch does address where to put the device in the room and offers tips on volume and brightness, but no maximum sound output in decibels, no measurement distance and no volume-limiter specification are published anywhere, so the guidance rests on advice alone with no figure or method behind it. Owners who have metered Hatch units report roughly 45 dB in the crib at their usual setting and 55–60 dB at higher settings.

This represents 16% of the total score.

Electrical & Battery Safety 78

This unit runs only from mains power through a supplied adapter and uses Bluetooth for setup plus Wi-Fi in use, yet no UL or ETL listing, no FCC ID and no adapter specification are published for it. The brand's prior shock-hazard problem was confined to the adapter shipped with Rest 1st Generation units, which was remedied with free replacements, and Hatch stopped sourcing from that adapter manufacturer; second-generation Rest units were not affected.

This represents 12% of the total score.

Sleep-Product Compliance 78

This is a plug-in nursery sound machine and night light rather than a sleep surface, and no applicable federal children's-product rule, compliance label or children's product certificate is named for it. The manufacturer is clearly identifiable — Hatch Baby, Inc. of Palo Alto, California — and the company has a documented record of working through CPSC on a prior corrective action.

This represents 12% of the total score.

Connected-App Privacy 93

Consumer Reports evaluated the Hatch Baby app hands-on alongside five other baby tracking apps, scoring setup, ease of use, features, security and privacy, and found that all six met modern network encryption standards while their privacy and security scores ran lower than their scores in other categories — that is one independent evaluation rather than several. The privacy terms are specific: the app collects a child's name, birthday and gender plus sleep, feeding and pumping logs and Expert Chat content, Expert Chat content is not sold, shared or used for targeted advertising, identifiers and browsing and commercial data are disclosed to advertising partners in a way that may count as a sale or sharing under state privacy laws, and Global Privacy Control signals are honoured. Setup requires an account and Bluetooth, and the device needs a stable Wi-Fi connection.

This represents 10% of the total score.

Recall History 89

We queried the full CPSC recall corpus — 9,944 records covering June 1973 to August 2026 — and found one recall against this brand: in July 2024 Hatch recalled the AC power adapter sold with Rest 1st Generation sound machines after 19 reports of the plastic housing detaching and two reports of minor electrical shock, covering about 919,400 US and 44,352 Canadian units. Hatch ran the recall jointly with CPSC and Health Canada, offered free replacement adapters, contacted registered owners directly and stopped sourcing adapters from that manufacturer; Rest 2nd Generation units were not affected. The caveat we are naming is that this recall is recent and sits in the same product class as this device, even though it concerned the adapter of an earlier generation.

This represents 10% of the total score.

Certification Credibility 77

No certification or safety-testing claim is made anywhere for this device — no named standard, no test lab and no certificate reference — and nothing on the topic of product testing is published at all alongside the otherwise detailed warranty, returns and privacy terms.

This represents 8% of the total score.

Emissions & Off-Gassing 78

No emissions certification, VOC or formaldehyde testing, or off-gassing guidance is published for this device, and no material or finish information is given for the enclosure that sits in the nursery.

This represents 8% of the total score.

Sleep-Support Claim Honesty 85

The marketing stays inside the wellness lane: it promises routine building, light and sound cues for naps, bedtime and Time-to-Rise, predictive schedules and 1:1 chat with sleep consultants, and Hatch states plainly that its products are not medical devices, that it does not provide medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, and that health questions belong with a doctor and emergencies with 911. The element missing is the evidence behind the repeated phrase "science-backed sounds" — no study, author or finding is named for it anywhere.

This represents 7% of the total score.

Transparency & Support 88

The warranty side is concrete: one year from registration, with named exclusions and a stated claim procedure for both US and non-US buyers. The disclosure stops short on the product itself — no materials list for the housing or components and no country of manufacture for this model are published.

This represents 7% of the total score.

Cord & Placement Safety 85

This is a corded unit that works only while plugged into an outlet, and Hatch does give guidance on where to place it in the room rather than in the crib. The missing element is dimensional: no cord length and no minimum crib-distance figure are published, which is what a parent needs to judge whether the cord can reach the sleep surface.

This represents 5% of the total score.

Material Disclosure Depth 77

There is no component-level materials disclosure for this product: the published detail covers colours, features, subscription content and app requirements, with nothing about the plastics, the speaker and light assembly, the adhesives or the finishes.

This represents 5% of the total score.

Customer Stories

We’ve been Hatch advocates since the very beginning. When our baby girl was first born, the Hatch quickly became one of our most-used baby items. She started sleeping through the night at just 4 months, and I honestly believe it was because of the routine we created around it. Every night we had the Hatch set to a dim light and white noise. When she woke up, that soft glow was the perfect night light. It was bright enough for diaper changes but never harsh. We didn’t have to flip on the bedroom light, which kept the room calm and cozy and helped her stay in her sleep cycle.Fast forward to now, our little one is 14 months, and during a recent move we misplaced our original Hatch. I was so excited to see the new Hatch Baby and get it set up in her room. It’s been a total game changer. The features go beyond just white noise and a night light. The nursery stories and lullabies are such a sweet part of her bedtime wind down now, and I love being able to control everything from the app without going back into her room. The routine builder has made bedtime smoother, and I’m already looking forward to introducing the time-to-rise feature as she gets a little older. Not to mention, I absolutely love the physical buttons included on the Hatch Baby. In terms of user experience it makes it even easier for you to use. The button at the top make it easier to turn on and off and the the way it rotates to adjust sound is also much easier. This was a HUGE plus for my mom who is taking care of our little one during the day and is not as technically advanced. This manual option makes it easy for her.And now, with baby number 2 arriving in just a few months, I’m even more grateful we have this. What I’m most excited about is that Hatch Baby includes access to a sleep consultant for six months. With our first, we figured things out through trial and error, but every baby is different. Knowing I don’t have to relearn sleep schedules on my own this time takes such a weight off. After…

This is my third Hatch, which already says a lot. We have one at home, one at my parents’ place for sleepovers, and I just bought this one for our newest baby’s room.We started using it when our first was a newborn, and it quickly became part of our daily rhythm. The sound quality is excellent (not tinny or harsh like some others), and the range of white noise and ambient sounds actually makes a difference in helping our baby settle and stay asleep. It creates a really consistent sleep environment, which I’ve found is key.The light feature is just as useful. It’s soft, customizable, and perfect for middle of the night feeds or diaper changes without fully waking the baby (or yourself). I especially love being able to adjust both brightness and color.I'm absolutely convinced that the consistent use of the light/sound combos helped sleep train our first baby and will no doubt help in the process of sleep training our next. Would highly recommend.

We love the Hatch Baby Sound Machine. Previously, we were trying to use a combination of two different night lights, a sound machine, and a clock all together. With the Hatch Baby, we can condense those 4 different products down into one. This gives us back a ton of space on our changing table and greatly simplifies those middle of the night wake-ups and changes. The ability to favorite multiple settings and then toggle through them with a tap is super useful. We have configured 3 favorites (low light only, low light + white noise, white noise only) and that combination suits our needs perfectly. Setting up the device was incredibly easy and you get the basic setup pretty much out of the box. One thing I'm really excited about is the ability to change and evolve the settings as our baby grows using the built in Library of recommendations for "Baby", "Toddler", and "Kid". So its an awesome physical product, and then on top of that there are helpful sleep guides in the app with the added ability to connect with a Sleep Consultant. I haven't tried that out yet but given how good the rest of the product is, I'm confident that's great too.
