Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I bathe my baby?
Three baths a week is plenty for most babies in the first year, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, because bathing too often can dry out their skin. Until the umbilical cord stump falls off, usually within 1–3 weeks, stick to gentle sponge baths.
What temperature should my baby's bath water be?
Aim for warm rather than hot water, around 37–38°C (98.6–100°F). Test it with your wrist or elbow, or use a bath thermometer. As an extra safeguard, set your water heater no higher than 49°C (120°F) to prevent scalds.
What should I have ready for my baby's first bath?
Gather everything before you start: a baby bathtub or newborn bath support, a gentle baby wash, a soft washcloth or bath mitt, a rinse cup, a hooded towel and a clean diaper. Never leave your baby alone in the bath, even for a moment.
What ingredients should I avoid in baby skincare?
Many parents avoid undisclosed fragrance ("parfum"), parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives and harsh sulfates, which can irritate sensitive skin. Birch requires brands to disclose every fragrance component and hold EWG Verified or NATRUE certification.
How can I help my baby's dry skin or eczema?
Keep baths short and lukewarm, pat skin dry rather than rubbing, and apply a fragrance-free moisturiser straight after bathing to lock in moisture. If dryness or rash persists, ask your pediatrician, as eczema may need specific treatment. Shop fragrance-free options in baby skincare.
When can I use sunscreen on my baby?
The American Academy of Pediatrics advises keeping babies under 6 months out of direct sun, using shade and protective clothing. If that isn't possible, a small amount of sunscreen on exposed areas like the face and hands is acceptable. From 6 months, use a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
When should I start brushing my baby's teeth?
Start as soon as the first tooth appears, using a soft infant toothbrush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste about the size of a grain of rice. Before teeth arrive, you can wipe the gums with a soft, damp cloth. Find first toothbrushes in grooming and care.
