Frequently Asked Questions

Can my baby sleep with a blanket?

No, not before 12 months. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping soft bedding, including loose blankets, out of a baby's sleep space for the first year. Use blankets for supervised awake time, and dress your baby in a sleep sack for naps and nighttime.

What's the difference between a swaddle blanket and a receiving blanket?

A swaddle blanket is large, usually square and made from thin, stretchy or breathable fabric like muslin or jersey, so you can wrap your newborn snugly. A receiving blanket is smaller and thicker, and is used for quick cuddles, burping, changing and covering a car seat or stroller while you're out.

How do I swaddle my baby safely?

Wrap the blanket snugly around your baby's chest and arms, but leave room at the hips so the legs can bend up and out. Always place a swaddled baby on their back to sleep, and stop swaddling as soon as your baby shows signs of trying to roll over. Never use weighted swaddles or blankets.

When should I stop swaddling?

Stop swaddling as soon as your baby shows signs of trying to roll, which for many babies happens around 2–4 months. At that point, move to a wearable sleep sack with the arms free.

Why choose muslin baby blankets?

Muslin is a loosely woven cotton that lets air flow through, which helps keep babies comfortable in warm weather. It gets softer with every wash, and muslin swaddles double as burp cloths, changing mats and light covers for supervised play.

How many baby blankets do I need?

A practical starting point is 2–4 swaddle blankets for the newborn weeks, plus a couple of receiving blankets and one cozier blanket for stroller rides and cuddles. Muslin swaddles have so many uses that most parents are glad to have a few spares.

What size is a baby swaddle blanket?

Muslin swaddle blankets are usually around 47 x 47 inches (120 x 120 cm), large enough to wrap a newborn securely. Receiving blankets and everyday baby blankets are typically smaller. Check each product's details for exact dimensions.
