Frequently Asked Questions

What is a lovey?

A lovey is a small comfort object that combines a soft animal head with a little blanket body. It's light and easy for small hands to grab, and many children adopt one as a favorite that helps them settle at naptime and bedtime.

When can my baby sleep with a lovey?

Wait until after 12 months. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises keeping soft objects, including loveys, out of a baby's sleep space for the first year. Before then, use a lovey for supervised cuddles and awake time, and a sleep sack for warmth at night.

What's the difference between a lovey and a blanket?

A lovey is much smaller than a baby blanket, usually around the size of a washcloth with an attached animal. That size is deliberate: it's easy for a child to carry everywhere and far less bulky than a full blanket.

Should I buy two of the same lovey?

Many parents buy a spare. Once a child bonds with a particular lovey, losing it can be genuinely upsetting, and a backup lets you rotate them so both stay equally worn and washed.

How do I wash a lovey?

Most organic cotton and muslin loveys can be machine washed cold on a gentle cycle and air dried. Wash a favorite regularly, since it will go everywhere with your child. Always check the care label first.

Is a lovey the same as a security blanket?

Yes, they're different names for the same thing. Some brands call them comforters, cuddle cloths or blankies. Whatever the name, it's a small comfort object a child keeps close.

When do babies start using a comfort object?

Many babies show interest between 6 and 12 months, though it varies a lot, and some children never bond with one. Introducing a lovey during awake cuddles gives your baby a chance to become familiar with it before it joins them for sleep after 12 months.

Do loveys make good baby gifts?

Yes. They're affordable, useful for years, and lovely paired with a matching plush toy from the same animal family. See more ideas in our baby gift sets.
