A safe crib starts with the right mattress, and the rest of the setup is simple. Choose a crib or mini crib from our non-toxic nursery furniture, then add a fitted sheet from our organic crib bedding. Instead of loose blankets, dress your baby in a sleep sack to keep them warm.
Our baby monitors and cameras let you check on your baby from another room, and you can see everything for the room in Nursery. Our newborn sleep checklist covers the basics. You can also log naps and night wakings with our sleep tracker.
Frequently Asked Questions
How firm should a crib mattress be?
A crib mattress should be firm and flat. When you press on it, it should spring back right away and not take the shape of your hand. A soft surface can make it harder for a baby to breathe if they roll onto their face. Firm can feel uncomfortable to an adult, but it’s the safest surface for a baby.
How do I know if a crib mattress fits my crib?
Push the mattress into one corner of the crib. If you can fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the crib frame, the mattress is too small. In the US, full-size crib mattresses must be at least 27 1/4 by 51 5/8 inches and no more than 6 inches thick, so most fit any standard full-size crib. Mini cribs need a mini crib mattress.
What is a 2-stage crib mattress?
A 2-stage mattress has a firmer side for infants and a slightly softer side for toddlers. Use the infant side for the first year, then flip it once your child is a toddler, following the manufacturer’s guidance. This means one mattress can last from birth until your child moves to a bigger bed.
Do I need a waterproof crib mattress?
A waterproof surface stops diaper leaks and spills from soaking into the mattress, so it lasts longer and stays cleaner. Look for a waterproof layer made without vinyl or PVC. If your mattress isn’t waterproof, use a thin, fitted waterproof protector made for that crib size.
Can a breathable mattress prevent SIDS?
No mattress can prevent SIDS. The AAP advises against relying on products that claim to lower SIDS risk. Breathable mattresses can be easier to clean and help with airflow, but the most important steps are a firm, flat surface, a fitted sheet only, and placing your baby on their back to sleep.
Can I add a mattress topper or extra padding?
No. Don’t add toppers, pillows, extra pads or soft bedding to a crib, bassinet or play yard. The only thing on top of the mattress should be a fitted sheet, plus a thin waterproof protector if needed. For bassinets and play yards, use only the mattress that came with the product.
When should my child move to a kids’ mattress?
Most children move to a twin bed or other kids’ bed between ages 3 and 5, often when they outgrow the toddler bed or start climbing out of the crib. Choose a supportive, medium-firm mattress. If you use a 2-stage crib mattress, the toddler side can last until then.
Do you offer free shipping and returns on mattresses?
Yes. Every order ships free with hassle-free returns, and first-time customers get 15% off at checkout. See our shipping and returns pages for details. Mattresses that have been unwrapped or used may have different return terms.
