Pretend play grows out of everything that came before it. Toddlers who loved stacking and activity toys start using them as props, and soft dolls become someone to feed, dress and put to bed. Stories feed the same imagination, so keep a few board books nearby and a favorite plush friend in the mix.

Frequently Asked Questions
When does pretend play start?
Most children start simple pretend play around 18 months, when they feed a doll or hold a block to their ear like a phone. It becomes richer between 2 and 4 years, when children invent whole scenarios and want you to join in.
Why is pretend play important?
Acting out everyday scenes helps children practice language, problem solving, taking turns and understanding how other people feel. It's also how they work through new experiences, like a trip to the store or a visit to the doctor.
What age is a play kitchen for?
Most children enjoy a play kitchen from around 2 years, and many stay interested until 5 or 6. Some toddlers start closer to 18 months with simple pouring and stirring. Check the age guidance on each product, especially where a set includes small pieces.
Should I choose a wooden or plastic play kitchen?
Wooden kitchens are sturdier, last through several children and look better in a living space. Recycled-plastic sets are lighter, easy to wipe clean and often better for outdoor use. Both work well; it comes down to space, budget and where it will live.
What should I buy alongside a play kitchen?
Play food and cooking utensils are what make a kitchen come alive: wooden fruit and vegetables, bread, cake and a few pots and pans. A grocery store playset or picnic set extends the same game further.
Are play kitchens safe for toddlers?
Choose sets that meet toy safety standards, check that paint and finishes are non-toxic, and follow the assembly instructions. For taller units, use any wall-anchoring hardware provided, in the same way you'd anchor nursery furniture, and keep small accessory pieces away from children under 3.
What is a mud kitchen?
A mud kitchen is an outdoor play kitchen designed to get messy: children mix water, mud, sand and leaves instead of pretend food. It's a favorite way to get toddlers outside, and it washes down easily.
