The toy is made from preservative-free reclaimed rubberwood, treated by kiln-drying rather than chemicals, coloured with organic pigments and water-based dyes, sealed with a water-based lacquer and assembled with formaldehyde-free E-Zero adhesive; PlanToys states it poses no hazard if a child mouths it and that it is Proposition 65 compliant. One parent independently sent PlanToys rubberwood to a laboratory and it came back free of additives, matching the company's account. That test covered the wood; the painted key surfaces were not part of it, and the paint is acknowledged to fade if chewed.

Independent reviewers who bought and used this xylophone found it well constructed — five keys strung on a strong flexible cord over a sturdy oval base with a built-in handle, light enough that grabbing fingers are not hurt — and they confirm the limitation PlanToys states itself: the wooden keys sound soft and muddy and are not accurately tuned, so it works as a tone explorer rather than an instrument for playing melodies. One reviewer notes its play value tails off after about a year, and an owner said the same.

This xylophone is marketed for children as young as 12 months and carries no small-parts or choking warning. A toy-safety watchdog assessed it against ASTM F963 labelling guidance and CPSC age-determination guidelines and flagged the slender, rigid mallet handle of roughly 9.5 inches as a potential ingestion and airway-occlusion hazard for children that age, with no warnings provided — the same hazard class that led to the recall of another brand's xylophone beater whose ball could separate. Age grading is also inconsistent between sellers: 12 months and up in most places, 3 years and up at one retailer selling the identical description.

We queried the full CPSC recall corpus (9,944 records covering 1973 to August 2026) and found a single PlanToys entry: a 2017 recall of about 500 baby gyms whose side rope crossbars posed a strangulation risk, remedied with a free replacement gym and with no injuries reported. That record sits in a different product category from this xylophone, and no other recall or violation is filed against the brand.

PlanToys asserts ASTM (USA) and EN71 (Europe) safety-standard compliance for this xylophone and publishes an ASTM test report and an EN71 test report against the item itself, plus company-level ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and SA 8000 certifications and a Proposition 65 compliance statement. No certificate or report numbers, testing-laboratory names or issue dates are printed alongside those claims, and the company states plainly that it is not FSC certified because it uses reclaimed plantation rubberwood rather than forest wood.

The material build is disclosed component by component — reclaimed rubberwood treated by kiln-drying rather than chemicals, formaldehyde-free E-Zero adhesive, organic pigments, water-based dyes and a water-based lacquer — with the country of manufacture stated as Thailand. PlanToys sells replacement parts for missing, broken or defective pieces and runs a toy repair clinic. A warranty length is not published.
