Frequently Asked Questions
What is GREENGUARD Gold certification?
GREENGUARD Gold is a UL certification for products with low chemical emissions. Products are tested for more than 10,000 chemicals and must meet strict limits on volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which makes it a useful benchmark for furniture and mattresses in a baby's room.
How do I set up a safe sleep space for my baby?
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends placing your baby on their back to sleep, on a firm, flat mattress in a crib or bassinet that meets CPSC safety standards. Use only a fitted sheet: no bumpers, pillows, blankets or soft toys. Room-sharing without bed-sharing is recommended, ideally for at least the first 6 months.
What should I look for in a crib mattress?
A crib mattress should be firm, flat and fit snugly in the crib. If you can fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the crib frame, the fit isn't tight enough. A waterproof, breathable cover makes cleaning easier. Browse our organic crib mattresses.
When should I move my baby from a bassinet to a crib?
Move your baby to a crib when they reach the bassinet's weight limit or start rolling over or pushing up on their hands, whichever comes first. For many babies this happens between 4 and 6 months. Always check the manufacturer's limits for your bassinet.
What is a convertible crib?
A convertible crib, often labelled 3-in-1 or 4-in-1, converts from a crib into a toddler bed, daybed and sometimes a full-size bed as your child grows. Conversion kits are sometimes sold separately, so check what's included before you buy.
Do nursery dressers and bookcases need to be anchored?
Yes. Furniture tip-overs are a serious risk for young children, so always anchor dressers, bookcases and other tall furniture to the wall using an anti-tip kit, even if the piece feels stable. Keep heavy items in lower drawers and avoid placing a TV on top of a dresser.
Do I need a baby monitor?
A monitor isn't essential, but many parents find an audio or video baby monitor useful for naps and nighttime. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against relying on any monitor to reduce the risk of SIDS. Safe sleep practices remain the most important protection.
