Teething often arrives alongside a lot of drool, so a few soft bibs are worth having within reach. Chilled teethers and a mouthing mitten help during fussy stretches, and a familiar lovey or plush toy can settle your baby afterwards.
For everyday play at the same stage, browse rattles, crinkle toys and a play gym or activity toy. Once solids start, a silicone feeder and soft-tipped spoons make first tastes easier: see feeding utensils and tableware. You can also browse all our non-toxic baby toys.
Frequently Asked Questions
When do babies start teething?
Most babies get their first tooth between 4 and 7 months, though it varies widely and some start earlier or much later. Common signs include extra drooling, chewing on everything, sore or swollen gums, and being more unsettled than usual.
How can I soothe a teething baby?
A chilled teether, a clean cool washcloth to chew, or gentle gum massage with a clean finger all help. Chill teethers in the fridge rather than the freezer, since frozen surfaces are too hard on sore gums.
What should I avoid for teething?
Avoid teething necklaces, bracelets and anklets, which pose strangulation and choking risks, and avoid numbing gels and tablets. US regulators have warned against benzocaine products for children under 2 because of rare but serious side effects. If you're unsure, ask your pediatrician.
Which is better, natural rubber or silicone?
Natural rubber teethers are soft, slightly grippy and have a familiar smell many babies like. Food-grade silicone is firmer, easy to clean and often dishwasher safe. Both are good choices. What matters more is that the teether is one piece, large enough not to be a choking hazard, and free of BPA and phthalates.
Why do some teethers have no hole?
A one-piece teether with no hole means water can't get inside, so mold can't grow where you can't see it. If a teether does have a hole, squeeze the water out after every wash and let it dry completely.
How do I clean a teether?
Wash natural rubber teethers by hand in warm soapy water and air dry them. Don't boil them or put them in the dishwasher or sterilizer, as heat breaks rubber down. Most silicone teethers can be washed in the dishwasher, but check the product page.
When should I replace a teether?
Replace any teether that is cracked, sticky, discolored, or has bites taken out of it, and check natural rubber regularly as it ages. If a teether has a hole and you see discoloration inside, throw it away.
Do you offer free shipping and returns on teethers?
Yes. Every order ships free with hassle-free returns, and first-time customers get 10% off at checkout, up to a maximum discount of $75. See our shipping and returns pages for details. Check whether opened teethers can be returned for hygiene reasons.
