Floor play changes quickly in the first two years. Newborns do best with a play gym or play mat and high-contrast cards for short bursts of tummy time. Add lightweight rattles and crinkle toys once your baby starts reaching, and natural rubber teethers when gums get sore.
Around the first birthday, shape sorters, stacking toys and climbing sets support problem solving and gross motor skills, while board books, soft dolls and pretend play sets build language and imagination. Our play and development checklist, mobility and play gear checklist and toddler play and learning checklist map it out stage by stage. You can also browse all our non-toxic baby toys.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a baby play gym?
A play gym is a soft mat with an arch or frame above it, hung with toys your baby can look at, bat and eventually grab. It gives newborns a reason to spend time on their back and their tummy, and most work from birth through the first year.
When should we start tummy time?
You can start from the first days at home, with a few minutes at a time, two or three times a day while your baby is awake and supervised. Build up gradually as your baby gets stronger. A padded play mat makes it more comfortable.
What's the difference between a play mat and a play gym?
A play mat is the padded surface itself, good for tummy time, rolling and later crawling. A play gym adds an overhead arch with hanging toys. Many parents start with a gym and keep using the mat long after the arch comes off.
What toys are best for the first six months?
Keep it simple: high-contrast cards and images, a play gym with hanging toys, soft rattles and a sensory ball. Babies this age are working on focusing, reaching and grasping, so a few well-chosen toys beat a big pile.
What is a Pikler triangle?
A Pikler triangle is a wooden climbing frame that lets toddlers practice climbing safely at their own pace. Most children are ready once they're pulling to stand and cruising confidently. Always use it on a soft surface, keep it away from furniture and windows, and supervise every session.
Are Montessori toys better for babies?
Montessori-style toys are usually simple, made from natural materials, and designed so the child leads the play rather than the toy. Many parents like them because they hold attention longer than light-and-sound toys, though what matters most is that a toy suits your child's stage.
Are high-contrast cards worth it?
Newborn vision is still developing, and strong black-and-white patterns are easier to focus on than pastel ones. Prop a card where your baby can see it during tummy time and swap the image every few days to keep their interest.
